Bigger problems than team name

I'm baffled by the sudden concern over the historical sports name, Redmen. I am proud to declare that I have a strong Native American background. My father was a native of Wareham, so I grew up with an Indian influence. I see nothing offensive about the name Redmen or any of its colorful images.

When I think or read about the Natick Redmen, I think of solid sportsmanship and honor by association. I don't spend any time or effort conjuring up some far-fetched implications. As I read the various articles about the current interest in the name, I learn that the name was indeed derived out of pride and respect. These are the qualities we should focus on.

As many parents are now preparing the process of sending our 8th graders to the high school next year, I would much rather be hearing about plans to help eliminate some of the scary elements which we are being advised about at that school. It's getting closer to home so it's a more prominent concern for us.

It sounds like we should send them to the high school with a lot more protection than just a winter coat. I would feel a whole lot better if as much attention was devoted to these real-live issues rather than some maligned misconceptions.

I think HS senior and football team captain, Nick Haddad, said it best when he referred to the issue as the "biggest nonproblem'' in Natick. I certainly hope that no time is taken out of the classroom for this issue. Creating and fueling unrest was no part of any civics class I ever had.
